Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound is 4 hours round trip. Book a tour that includes bus+boat so you don't have to drive the winding mountain roads yourself.
The tunnel through Homer Pass on the drive is an adventure itself. Kids love the dark tunnel and the dramatic reveal of the fiord on the other side.
Motion sickness is rare on the fiord (it's sheltered) but if your kid is prone, skip the breakfast buffet and stick to light snacks before boarding.
Bring warm layers even in summer. It's a fiord — it rains 182 days a year and the wind off the water is cold. Ponchos are provided but cheap ones.
Book the earliest cruise (8:45 AM) or the latest (2 PM). Midday boats are packed and you'll fight for deck space at waterfalls.

A Real Parent's Story
The dolphin swam alongside our boat for 20 minutes
“A pod of bottlenose dolphins appeared alongside our cruise and stayed for nearly half an hour. Our 7-year-old ran from one side of the boat to the other screaming 'SHE'S JUMPING!' We missed half the fiord views. Didn't care.”

We'd saved for two years for this New Zealand trip. Milford Sound was my bucket list item. The fiord itself was stunning — waterfalls everywhere, sheer cliffs, the whole thing. But what made it for the kids was the dolphin pod that appeared 20 minutes in. They swam alongside, jumped, played. Our 7-year-old was so excited she nearly fell over the railing. A crew member grabbed her jacket. She didn't notice. She was too busy naming the dolphins.
