Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Visit in early spring or autumn. Ashgabat summers hit 45 degrees C and the animals retreat to shade. The zoo closes during the hottest hours.
The Turkmenian kulan enclosure is the zoo's highlight - these wild asses are a subspecies unique to Central Asia and surprisingly graceful.
The pelican lake near the entrance is oddly charming - kids can watch them preen and wade along the bank.
Combine with a visit to the nearby Altyn Asyr Bazaar (20 min drive) for lunch and traditional crafts.
Admission is under 10 manat ($1) making it one of the cheapest things to do in Ashgabat with kids.
The zoo is small enough to see in 90 minutes. Do not expect world-class exhibits or enrichment.
Bring your own water. The kiosks have limited stock and Ashgabat is extremely dry.
English signage is minimal. Google Translate will help identify exhibits.

A Real Parent's Story
The quietest zoo we have ever visited
“We were the only visitors at 10 AM on a Thursday. A keeper noticed our son's excitement and led him behind the scenes to feed the golden eagle. Turkmen hospitality at its finest.”

Ashgabat Zoo isn't going to win any awards, but it was one of our most memorable zoo visits. We had the entire place to ourselves. A keeper saw our 6-year-old staring at the eagle and motioned for us to follow him. He brought out raw chicken and let our son feed the eagle through a protective glove. The eagle spread its wings - easily 2 metres across. Our son hasn't stopped talking about it.
