Why Families Love Sofia Zoo
The oldest and largest zoo in the Balkans, founded by royal decree in 1888. Set in a shaded 36-hectare park, it houses over 1,000 animals including brown bears, camels, zebras, and a significant primate collection. Recent renovations have added modern enclosures and a walkthrough bird aviary. The zoo has a wonderfully old-school, relaxed vibe that feels like stepping back in time.

Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Combining with Borisova Gradina Park next door makes a lovely family afternoon. The park has paddle boats and ice cream stands.
The bear enclosure is the most popular. Visit in the morning when they're active — by afternoon they're napping in the shade.
The zoo is large and spread out. Bring a stroller even for a toddler who likes walking — there's a lot of ground to cover.
The petting zoo has goats, sheep, and rabbits. Hand sanitizer stations are limited so bring your own wipes.
Entry is only €3 for adults, €1.50 for kids. At these prices, you can't go wrong even for a quick visit.
Bulgarian lev (BGN) is a must. The ticket booth and kiosks don't accept cards or euros.

A Real Parent's Story
The oldest zoo in the Balkans won our hearts
“It's not a modern zoo. The bear pit is frankly outdated. But my daughter fed a goat, watched a camel yawn, and chased pigeons for an hour. She doesn't know or care about 'enclosure standards.' She just had the best day.”

I read critical reviews about Sofia Zoo and almost skipped it. I'm glad I didn't. Yes, some parts need upgrading — but the staff are kind, the grounds are beautiful, and my kids had a blast. The playground inside the zoo is excellent. The camel ride (€2) was my daughter's highlight. Sometimes a 'good enough' zoo with happy kids beats a 'perfect' zoo where they're bored.
