Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Combine the zoo with Chapultepec Castle (same park, pay entrance). The castle has incredible views of the city and murals by Diego Rivera.
The zoo is enormous (17 hectares). Rent a pedal cart near the main entrance if your kids tire easily - it's fun and covers more ground.
Go at 9am when it opens. The giant pandas are most active in the morning and the crowds are thin. By 11am it's shoulder-to-shoulder.
The zoo is free (!) but you need to reserve a timeslot online. Weekend slots book up days in advance - book Tuesday for Saturday.
Bring snacks and water. The food inside is cheap but greasy - quesadillas from the stalls near the entrance are the best option.

A Real Parent's Story
Giant pandas at a free zoo - Mexico is incredible
“My daughter touched the glass watching Xin Xin the giant panda roll on her back eating bamboo. She looked at me and said 'This is the best day ever and it didn't cost anything.' We spent 4 hours at a world-class zoo for zero pesos. Mexico City, I love you.”

Chapultepec Zoo is genuinely world-class and entirely free. The giant panda exhibit is the highlight - they have a breeding program with China and the enclosure is beautiful. The aviary is a walk-through experience with hundreds of birds flying freely. We saw a jaguar swimming, a lion roaring, and elephants getting a bath. My kids still talk about the zoo more than any paid attraction in CDMX.
