Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The museum is small (3 galleries, 90 minutes max) so don't plan a full day. Combine with other Male attractions like the nearby Grand Friday Mosque.
The top floor has an exhibit on traditional Maldivian boats (dhoni) that kids find surprisingly fascinating - there is a model they can touch.
The highlight for most kids is the throne of Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III - it is glittering gold and they can get within arm's reach of it.
Air conditioning is strong. Bring a light jacket even in Male's heat - the contrast going from 35C outside to 18C inside is jarring.
Sultan Park attached to the museum is a nice shaded playground break for kids who need to run around after the indoor galleries.
Photography is allowed but no flash. The coral stone carvings in the first gallery are incredibly delicate and light-sensitive.
The museum is closed on Fridays and public holidays. Check before you go - many tourists have made this mistake.

A Real Parent's Story
A break from the beach that everyone needed
“Three days of sun and sand had our kids lobster-red and restless. The museum was a cool, quiet break where they actually learned something.”

We were on a resort island for a week but took the speedboat to Male for a cultural day. The National Museum was a surprise hit. Our 8-year-old loved the sultan's gold throne and asked a hundred questions. Our 10-year-old was fascinated by the Buddhist artefacts - she did not know the Maldives was Buddhist before Islam. Two hours of air-conditioned learning then ice cream at the park.
