Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Visit between October and March when Kathmandu weather is mild and clear. Monsoon season (June-September) makes walkways slippery and reduces animal visibility.
The one-horned rhinoceros enclosure is the zoo's superstar - Nepal has the second-largest population of these endangered giants in the world.
The Himalayan monal pheasant is Nepal's national bird and stunningly colourful. Find it in the aviary near the entrance.
The zoo has a small playground with swings and a slide near the petting zoo - a good break point for toddlers.
Entry is NPR 100 ($0.75) for Nepali citizens and NPR 500 ($4) for foreigners. Children under 5 enter free.
The petting zoo has rabbits and goats that kids can feed. Buy feed at the entrance (NPR 20 per bag).
Combine with nearby Patan Durbar Square and the Golden Temple for a full cultural day.
The boating lake is charming but the paddle boats are basic. Kids love it regardless.
Closed on Tuesdays. This catches many tourists off guard. Plan around it.

A Real Parent's Story
The rhino yawned and my daughter screamed with laughter
“We were watching a massive one-horned rhino when it let out an enormous yawn. Our 5-year-old thought it was hilarious. She tried to imitate it the rest of the day.”

Kathmandu Zoo isn't fancy but it has a charm that big zoos lack. The rhino was dozing near the fence and we could see every wrinkle and fold. When it yawned, our daughter screamed with laughter. The petting zoo was gentle - the goats are used to kids and don't nibble aggressively. We spent 2.5 hours and everyone was happy. The zoo grounds have lovely old trees where langur monkeys occasionally visit from the neighbourhood.
