Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Buy the combined museum ticket (700 NPR) — it covers both the palace and the museum, saving 40% over individual tickets.
Visit early (7-8 AM) to avoid crowds and heat — the square is magical at sunrise with fewer vendors hassling you.
Hire a registered guide for $8-10 — they know where the hidden guardian statues are that kids love touching.
Bring a small ball or frisbee — the main courtyard is huge and kids get bored of temples fast.
Pack snacks and water from outside — the cafe inside charges 3x street prices for basic items.

A Real Parent's Story
When a 5-year-old out-haggled me
“My daughter negotiated down to 100 NPR for a tiny brass bell. The vendor was so amused he threw in a second one for free.”
I usually do all the bargaining, but at Patan my 5-year-old decided she wanted a little brass bell. She held up one finger and said 'One rupee.' The vendor burst out laughing. They went back and forth for five minutes, him pretending to be outraged, her completely serious. Ended up getting two bells for basically nothing. The vendor said she was the best negotiator he'd seen all week.
