Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Do NOT attempt the summit with kids under 10. The Eorimok trail to the crater rim is perfect — 2-3 hours round trip with stairs and wooden boardwalks.

2

The Yeongsil trail is shorter (1.5h round trip) but steeper. Good for families with older kids (8+). Eorimok is better for smaller children.

3

Bring at least 1 liter of water per person. There's one refill station at the shelter but it's slow.

4

Start by 7am in summer. The mountain gets hot by 10am and afternoon clouds can roll in fast.

5

Pack layers — it's 10C cooler at the crater rim than the base. Kids in shorts will shiver.

6

Trekking poles for adults really help with the younger ones on steep sections.

A Real Parent's Story

She said 'I can't' 47 times. Then she reached the top.

Our 7-year-old complained through the first kilometer. Then she saw the crater lake. She ran the last 100 meters. The 'I did it' smile was worth every whine.

Hallasan was the hardest family hike we've done — not because of difficulty, but because kids. Eorimok trail is a steady incline with stairs. Our youngest needed 4 snack breaks. But the top is incredible — a massive crater lake surrounded by volcanic rock. We sat there for 30 minutes just eating and staring. She still talks about 'her mountain'.
