Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Visit Shukkeien FIRST (opens 9 AM). It's calm and uncrowded in the morning — koi are most active and kids can feed them for 100 yen.
The castle has a small museum with samurai swords and armor on the 3rd floor. Kids can touch a replica katana (supervised).
Shukkeien has a tea ceremony experience for 500 yen. Kids get served matcha and a sweet that even picky eaters love.
Don't climb to the top floor with a sleeping toddler — the stairs are steep and narrow like Matsumoto Castle.
Combine with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park — it's only a 15-minute walk through the city center.

A Real Parent's Story
The garden that saved our Hiroshima trip from crying kids
“After the Peace Museum (heavy for a 6-year-old), Shukkeien was the perfect reset. Koi fish, turtles, stepping stones, and matcha. She was laughing again within 10 minutes.”

We planned to spend an hour at Shukkeien as an afterthought before leaving Hiroshima. We stayed 3 hours. The garden is designed as a miniature representation of famous Japanese landscapes — the kids didn't care about that, but they loved the stepping-stone bridges across the pond. The castle from the outside is stunning against the sky. A perfect calm morning destination.
