Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Book the joy ride (Darjeeling to Ghum and back, 2 hours) — the full journey to Siliguri takes 7 hours which is too long for most kids.
Request the open-window car if available — kids can stick their heads out to feel the mountain breeze (safely).
Book at least 2 weeks in advance online — the heritage steam engine sells out especially during peak season.
Bring light jackets even in summer — at 2,000m elevation the ride gets chilly once the train starts moving.
Pack motion sickness bands for kids — the winding tracks and sharp loops can upset sensitive stomachs.

A Real Parent's Story
Choo-choo through the clouds
“My 3-year-old spent the entire ride shouting 'CHOO CHOO' at every tunnel. Passengers were filming her instead of the mountains.”
We booked the Toy Train thinking it would be a nice photo op. It became the defining memory of our trip. Our 3-year-old stood at the window the whole time, yelling 'CHOO CHOO' every time the whistle blew. Other passengers started filming her instead of Kanchenjunga. By the third tunnel, half the car was joining in. The train attendants were laughing so hard. When we got off, they gave her a little engineer's hat. She wore it for the rest of the trip.
