Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The aquarium inside the zoo costs extra (200 THB) but the freshwater tunnel is genuinely impressive - giant catfish swim right overhead.
The zoo is on a hill and very spread out; rent a golf cart (300 THB/hour) if you have toddlers, otherwise expect a lot of walking.
The panda exhibit closes for nap time from 11am-1pm - see them first thing or after lunch.

A Real Parent's Story
Pandas made my kids forget about iPads
“Two pandas eating bamboo for an hour - and my kids watched the entire thing without blinking. Chiang Mai Zoo delivered.”

The zoo itself is a bit old and hilly, but the animals are well-cared for and the panda exhibit is world-class. We saw Lin Hui munching bamboo less than 3 meters away through the glass. The snow leopard was hiding, which disappointed my 6-year-old, but the white tiger and gibbon enclosures made up for it. The aquarium tunnel was better than expected - freshwater fish the size of small sharks. For the price (150 THB adult, 75 THB child), it's fantastic value. Just rent the golf cart.
